Saunders vows to sign quality players

WREXHAM manager Dean Saunders has reassured worried supporters about his plans to strengthen the Dragons squad during the close season.

Saunders, back at his desk yesterday after World Cup duty with Wales, remains confident his “wait and see” strategy will pay dividends in the weeks ahead.

“We are just waiting on a few things, but I am in no rush,” he said. “The sort of players I want are thinking they might yet have a chance to play at a higher level, although they will probably find they can’t.

“We know what we are doing and everything is in order. Football has changed a great deal compared to how it used to be and there are 700 players out of work. I speak to different managers all the time and many of them are in a similar position to me.

“Our supporters need to know there is no need to panic because we will have a team ready to go when the season begins.”

The Dragons boss has spent the early part of the summer trying to thin out the squad he inherited. Gavin Ward, Anthony Williams, Patrick Suffo, Sam Aiston, Levi Mackin, Jeff Louis and Kyle Critchell have all left the club since the season ended, while several other top earners remain at the club – Michael Proctor, Nat Brown and Tom Kearney among them. But the Dragons boss has said he would again be looking to use the loan system to his advantage.

First, though, he wants to unveil some new faces in a move designed to further boost season ticket sales before the campaign gets under way in August.

“I’ve got my cards in front of me and now it’s all about when I play them,” he added. “Make no mistake, we are going to have some good players at this club next season. But at the moment I am prepared to sit back and watch it all unfold and I will not be rushed.”
