Foster Could Make Move Permanent

On loan Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster today hinted that should the chance arise he would not move out a permanent move to the North Wales club.

Foster, Stoke City’s third choice ‘keeper, is at Wrexham as cover for the injured Andy Dibble for a month and made a fantastic debut in the 2-1 LDV Vans Trophy win at Hereford on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old who still hopes to break into the first team at the Britannia Stadium, said a move away from Stoke is never an impossibility.

Foster said: “If I am going to be a first choice goalkeeper things like that could happen. I’m contracted at Stoke for another two years so it’s between the clubs if anything like that is going to happen.

“I am third choice goalkeeper at Stoke behind Steve Simonsen and Ed de Goey so there are limited chances there. But I have got a contract at Stoke so maybe there is a long-term future there.”

Just 36 hours after arriving in Wrexham, Foster helped his new team mates reach the LDV Vans Trophy Northern Section Final with victory over Hereford at Edgar Street with Wrexham facing fellow League One side Oldham over to legs to decide who gets a dream showcase final at the Millennium Stadium with either Southend or Bristol Rovers.

A clearly elated Foster, who has never played in the Stoke first team but made two appearances on loan at Kidderminster earlier this season, was delighted with the way things went at Edgar Street.

He said: “I thought I did quite well but I’m just pleased for the team to get through. Hopefully we can get to the final and if I’m still here, play at the Millennium Stadium.

“I am over the moon though was hugely nervous. When I went on loan at Kidderminster, that was my league debut and I was a bit more nervous. I’ve got a bit more used to it so that’s why I handled it quite well”.

Following the failure of Spanish signing Xavi Valero to instill confidence in both his team mates and Wrexham manager Denis Smith, Foster was brought in after Smith failed to find more experienced cover for Andy Dibble and the youngster was appreciative to be given a chance to prove himself.

Foster said: “Goalkeepers don’t tend to usually mature until 24 or 25. I’m 21 now and still a baby for a goalkeeper.

“I’ve just been playing in the reserves all season at Stoke. I’ve been doing well, I think they’ve had a few people watching me so that made his decision for him which is nice.”

Foster will now make his league debut for Wrexham against Doncaster Rovers at The Racecourse on Clubs in Crisis Day on Saturday in front of a bumper crowd with fans all over the country making the trip to North Wales for the game, in a game which could see Wrexham move on the verge of being out of the relegation zone since they went into administration and were deducted 10 points.
